My Take on Why You Need an Assault Weapon:
If you read my “What is at Stake in Hong Kong” post or have been keeping up with the news recently, then you know about the tyranny and repression in Hong Kong right now. Protesters and police are battling it out in the streets and Hong Kong’s citizens try to preserve their cherished autonomy from China.
But, the government won’t have it and is terrorizing its own citizens through violent attacks and reprisals. So, what do those awful incidents of police brutality show? They show why you need an assault weapon.
If the citizens of Hong Kong were armed with the proper weapons to fight tyranny, then perhaps they wouldn’t be in a situation where their police can act so violently towards them. As I’ve mentioned before, one of the best reasons to own a firearm is as a deterrent to government tyranny.
There are other, more practical reasons of course, such as hunting and self-defense, but the most important reason is that firearms give you an avenue to resist and fight back against a tyrannical government. Like the patriots at Lexington and Concord during the American Revolution. Or the Free French during WWII.
Any situation in which citizens have to resist their government or a foreign occupation force shows why you need an assault weapon; they let you fight back.
Liberals say that no one “needs” to own an assault rifle. Luckily, we Americans and blessed with the 2nd Amendment and can just remark that the 2nd Amendment specifically states “shall not be infringed” and that it’s a Bill of Rights, not a Bill of Needs.
Hong Kong, however, isn’t as fortunate as the US is in that regard. Because there is no 2nd Amendment in Hong Kong, its citizens can’t defend themselves properly. They can’t water the tree of liberty that Thomas Jefferson referenced in his quote about liberty. Hopefully their situation shows you why you need an assault weapon. Owning one is the best deterrent to tyranny that you could possibly have.
