What is Democratic Socialism? Utter Garbage
If you’re like me, then you get easily annoyed when radicals on the far-left act like democratic socialism is the cure to all of society’s ills without even answering the all-important, “what is democratic socialism?” question. It, they say, will somehow solve the problems of poverty, disease, racism, crime, and the education gap. Of course, that’s all absurd, but modern socialists either don’t know or don’t care.
More importantly (in the short-term, at least), socialism, as many on the right and realistic left are quick to point out, is a violent ideology that always leads to gulags and the execution of dissidents. Recognizing that, communists like Bernie have re-branded their ideology; now it’s “democratic socialism.” You’re probably wondering, what is democratic socialism? Is it better than the “real socialism” of days past? Nope, it’s garbage.
Some of you might remember that I’ve already addressed this issue, to some extent at least, in a previous post on the similarity between socialism and democratic socialism. But, I think it’s worth saying again because no one outside of those, like me and the author of Gunpowder Coast, that frequently attack socialist sympathizers, seem to understand that.
An incredible number of young people support socialism. Perhaps even more than half! Even some people on the right, especially conservative college students, seem to be more amenable to democratic socialism than one would expect. That’s not to say they’re for it. But, they seem to think that it is less evil than the socialism of the 20th century. That view is described in-depth in the last section of Socialism Sucks, in which the authors speak with young socialist supporters in America; they overwhelmingly rejected the old-style socialism and support democratic socialism.
Unfortunately, that view is both wrong and dangerous. The real communism of days past is the same thing at its root as the democratic socialism of today. Nationalization of industry, income equality, and tyranny are the real nature of socialism. AOC, even if she won’t admit it, wants that. So does Bernie. So does Kamala, as we saw when she called for equality of outcome.
So, whatever modifying word you put in front- national, democratic, Soviet, etc- the base ideology is the same. One of compulsion, force, and misery. That won’t change just because modern socialists are far softer people (as you can tell by looking at pictures of Antifa terrorists) than their ideological forefathers in the 20th century.
America is at a crossroads. The government has seized huge power over our economy to combat the Chinese flu. Trump should reverse that government-enforced economic collapse immediately; America is a capitalist nation and there is no reason for the government to be intervening in what private businesses are doing. We need to take the right path and have clear view of what the right path.
As you might expect a young conservative to say, capitalism is undoubtedly the right path. Its virtues are what has led to so much that is good in America. Socialism, which has once again reared its ugly head in America, which is why we need to ask the question “what is Democratic socialism?”
Capitalism is what makes America prosperous and is what has eradicated real poverty in America. Relative poverty still exists because everyone can’t be equally prosperous, but real poverty is gone. Look at North Korea and then look at America. Or Venezuela. Or Cuba. Before a leftist even answers “what is democratic socialism,” where would you rather live? My guess is America; that’s because we’re capitalistic and therefore have a strong economy and excellent living conditions. Other nations, namely those socialist ones that were just mentioned, don’t have the same living conditions we do. That’s not because of their capitalist past, it is because they are socialist countries right now.
What is democratic socialism? The same failure of an ideology as socialism has always been and always will be. The same ideology that destroyed Venezuela and led to suffering around the world. It’s just socialism. Nothing more and certainly nothing less.

Now that you’ve read this article and know the answer to “what is Democratic Socialism,” it is time for you to go out and start teaching others about it. That is what I am trying to do with this blog, with my Twitter account, and in my personal life. Far too many young people, especially those on college campuses, don’t know the truth about socialism.
So, we need to take the time to teach them. Some are too far gone to be taught. Those that can read about the millions killed by socialism or a book about the horrors inflicted by socialism, such as The Gulag Archipelago, without cringing or changing their belief about the moral supremacy of socialism are too far gone to be saved. I do not think they are worth the time it would take to debate them.
But, on the other hand, there are a huge number of college students that have been infected by the socialist ideology of their professors, but that aren’t yet true ideologues and could be saved. They can’t answer the question “what is Democratic socialism,” so you still have time to shape their outlook.
Those are the people we should focus on. Young conservatives should debate them in the classroom in a civil manner and discuss conservatism with them in their private lives to make sure that they’ve at least been exposed to the true answer to “what is democratic socialism.” Doing so is crucial to the survival of America; we cannot survive, much less thrive, as a nation if a huge segment of the population wants to rob from Peter to give to Paul. Remember, extremism in defense of liberty is no vice, so do whatever it takes to strike down their opinions.
If you’re a parent or grandparent of someone who does not understand that the historically correct answer to “what is democratic socialism?” is “the same, regressive, authoritarian type of socialism that existed in the 20th Century,” do not write them off or let them off the hook. Instead, educate them on the true nature of socialism and what it leads to. Teach them that the answer to “what is Democratic Socialism” isn’t “rainbows and rivers of milk and honey,” but rather “the same evil system that killed millions in the 20th Century.”
Facts do still persuade some people, and persuading those people is the only way to win the culture war long term. Republicans won’t be able to win in the future if they can’t convince young people to answer “what is Democratic Socialism” with my second answer in the paragraph above. That statement and the view it conveys is a firewall against radical leftism. It might not make them a Republican, but it will at least ensure that they don’t fall for the lies of the most evil system to have ever existed.
My point in that spiel about what you should do isn’t to make you uncomfortable or feel like you’re not doing enough to fight for conservatism. Based on your being on this blog, you probably are doing a lot more than most. Instead, I’m just pointing out that if we really want to win in future years, we have to convince people to answer “what is Democratic Socialism” in the correct manner. I hope you work with me to educate people on that and on what Democratic Socialism is.
After all that, you might still be wondering “what is democratic socialism?” I’ve ranted about how evil socialism is, but might have not sufficiently answered the question. So, here is my answer; democratic socialism is the same, tired old philosophy that killed millions upon millions of people in the 20th Century and that Ayn Rand ranted about in Atlas Shrugged. Democratic socialism is the idea that everyone has a right to share in the wealth of the productive members of society merely because we’re all living. It’s the idea that the rich are evil merely because they are rich.
There is nothing different about democratic socialism. It is just a rebranding of the ideology of death that we should all recognize and hate. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise; they are a liar or someone with a vested interest in pushing for redistribution of wealth policies. Remember that and tell it to anyone who does not have a real answer to “what is democratic socialism?”
