The Quote:
“If you saw Atlas, the giant who holds the world on his shoulders, if you saw that he stood, blood running down his chest, his knees buckling, his arms trembling but still trying to hold the world aloft with the last of his strength, and the greater his effort the heavier the world bore down upon his shoulders – What would you tell him?”
I…don’t know. What…could he do? What would you tell him?”
To shrug.” – Francisco D’Anconia in Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
Analysis:
Future American leaders listen to read this quote carefully and understand it. It is important because it shows that everyone, no matter how strong-willed, has a breaking point. The “titans of industry” in America, the “Atlases” that hold up our world, will only take so much. Taxes are burdensome. Regulations are burdensome. Government meddling is burdensome. Employees complain and are lazy and expect to not be fired. All of those things wear down our business leaders.
They have been able to handle it so far, the American economy keeps chugging along. But for how much longer? If this continues to happen, American businesses will break. Luckily, as I outlined in my “Was Atlas Shrugging?” article, the Trump administration has provided a break for businesses. Now at least taxes are lower and there is far less regulation.
But still the threat remains. It seems as if each day the Democratic contenders get farther and farther to the left. They espouse socialism, an abhorrent ideology of envy, and rally millennial voters to their causes. That has to stop. American businesses won’t put up with socialism or any more regulation- they will close or move. Atlas will shrug.
To prevent that, voters have to make the choice to elect politicians that are pro-business. Men like President Donald Trump who will do whatever they can to open the international playing field for American businesses through trade deals, while also cutting taxes and deregulating at home. Then we will see the economy boom.
But if there isn’t deregulation or things like it in the future, don’t beg businesses to hold on. Instead, just tell Atlas to shrug. It’s the moral thing to do.
