Samuel Adams on Preserving Liberty

The Quote by Samuel Adams on Preserving Liberty:

“No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and virtue is preserved. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauched in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders.” -Samuel Adams

I think that this quote by Samuel Adams on preserving liberty is great because of the warning in it. A people who are virtuous and desire to be free will remain free, or be able to throw off the yoke of tyranny, as I described in my review of The Anti-Federalist Papers. That is something that happens all over the world and has happened for centuries. The American Revolution. The fall of the Soviet Union. The Free French. Good people can become free or remain free. The scary part, however, is the second sentence.

Samuel Adams on preserving liberty

Modern Americans are not a virtuous people, just as feared in this quote by Samuel Adams on preserving liberty. Many are good, but the culture reeks of ignorance and debauchery. The very things Adams was warning against. That is evident in the news every day. Many of our problems stem from those two veins. Society used to be quite different. That was the society that beat the Nazi socialists, climbed out of the Great Depression, and fought the early Cold War. They survived some of America’s darkest days.

On the other hand, many modern Americans are weak. I’ve seen it on my college campus. Students can’t even handle the stress of writing a paper. Nor can they handle the concept of free speech and hearing things they disagree with, as I discuss in “Free Speech on College Campuses.” How would they respond to a hot war with Communist China now that our new Cold War with China has begun? Probably not well.

That’s because, as is described in books like Coming Apart, The Great Degeneration, and Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic, Americans are no longer an upstanding, hard-working people. They’re addicted to drugs and welfare.

Those addictions aren’t the hallmarks of an upstanding republic that wants to preserve its liberty. Rather, they’re the hallmarks of a collapsing and decaying society that has given up on liberty and retreated to the embrace of drugs and government-provided money. They need to regain the spirit of the Founding Brothers and remember the contents of this quote by Samuel Adams on preserving liberty.

To correct those shortcomings and regain that spirit, conservatives need to start pushing their values in the private sphere of life. Don’t get the government to promote morals, do it yourself by advocating for them. Talk about Christianity, why drugs and those that sell them are bad, and why America should return to being moral. That’s the point of this quote by Samuel Adams on preserving liberty, so it’s what we need to do.
