Reminder: CNN Paid an Antifa Agitator at “Capitol Riot”

As CNN desperately tries to reinvent itself in the wake of massively plummeting ratings and a complete lack of credibility after the way it conducted itself during the 2016-2020 Trump years, it’s important to remember what CNN has actually been up to.

When one really looks at the CNN problems, they extend far beyond the personnel failures, which Tucker Carlson slammed referred to as a “pedo outbreak” at CNN, and even extend beyond the obvious bias of its content though it cloaks itself in the idea that it’s defending the truth and only reporting the unbiased truth.

In fact, problems at CNN were so bad in January of 2021, perhaps the height of its openly partisan behavior, that it paid an Antifa rioter (though perhaps without knowing at the time that he was affiliated with Antifa) who took part in the Capitol Riot in January of that year, something that even blue checkmark Twitter was willing to recognize.

Kyle Cheney, for example, reported on Twitter that:

NEW: John Sullivan, charged for his participation in the Jan. 6 riots, was paid $35,000 apiece from CNN and NBC for his footage inside the Capitol. More on his detention hearing from @joshgerstein

The Politico article he included, written by Josh Gerstein, reported that:

A federal magistrate judge has turned down prosecutors’ effort to block a man accused of participating in the Capitol riot from using Twitter and Facebook, but ordered him to end his involvement with a business he founded that the Justice Department says promotes and glorifies violent protests.

The defendant, John Sullivan of Utah, has maintained that he attends raucous demonstrations as a journalist, sharing videos through his Insurgence USA website and social media platforms. Sullivan’s defense attorney even filed invoices with the court showing that CNN and NBC each paid Sullivan’s firm $35,000 last month for rights to video he filmed of chaotic scenes outside and inside the Capitol, including the deadly shooting of protester Ashli Babbitt by a U.S. Capitol Police officer.

[…]Sullivan has become one of the more prominent individuals charged in the Capitol riot because of interviews he did with news outlets like CNN and a vigorous debate about whether he’s an Antifa provocateur.

It’s not just that CNN paid someone at the event for video. That would have been completely reasonable, something that most news outlets, if not all, were surely doing.

No, what set them paying him apart was that he’s a known Antifa collaborator. Again according to Politico, “prosecutors contend that Sullivan is not a mere bystander or chronicler of protests. Instead, they say, he actively encourages violence, telling viewers how to make Molotov cocktails and evade identification by police.

Perhaps CNN didn’t know at the time what Mr. Sullivan’s affiliations were. But, still, it paid an Antifa provocateur tens of thousands of dollars for video he filmed while taking part in the Capitol riot. That’s the sort of network it is. Further, many contend that it should have known. As Kyle Becker, a former Fox News employee, claimed on Trending Politics:

Let me say as someone who has worked for a top cable news show, these bookings do not happen without a basic background check. CNN had to have known.

Becker, adding to what Sullivan was up to, also reported that:

John Earle Sullivan, a radical self-described “revolutionary” who literally founded a group called “Insurgence USA,” was arrested and charged in January for his role in helping to incite a riot amid the heavy pro-Trump crowd that had gathered at the U.S. Capitol.

Yet more evidence came from KSL, which asked Sullivan after the incident if he was a part of Antifa. As it reported:

When he was asked if he was a member of Antifa, as he has used the hashtag in his social media posts, he said he understands where there could be confusion.

“If people are saying I’m Antifa, as far as a terrorist organization, I’m not,” he said. “Am I anti-fascist? We all are anti-fascist. And that’s what we should all strive for being. I have my own organization, Insurgence USA, and that’s what it is for. That’s really what it is.”

CNN is obviously trying to restore its tarnished image, something that will most likely take the form of firing certain “stars” that have outlived their usefulness.

Perhaps it can do so, but first it’ll have to overcome things like this incident with Mr. Sullivan. It paid an Antifa agitator, and even if it didn’t know at the time, it should have known, as Kyle Becker pointed out. That’s worth remembering.
