OOF: CNN Axes Another Big Name from Its Prime Time Lineup, Continues Dramatic Shakeup

Following Trump being ousted and Biden being ushered into office, a slowing news cycle and generally bad news for Democrats came alongside falling ratings and viewership from CNN. It no longer has the airport contract that once meant all travelers watched CNN, CNN+ was an expensive failure, and things generally went poorly for the leftist network over the past year and a half or so.

Its new boss, however, has a strategy for shaking things up and revitalizing the network. That strategy is making CNN more of a straight news source rather than a collection of leftist opinion that’s slightly toned down from the cat lady type craziness you see on MSNBC.

That new boss is Chris Licht. He, speaking on his goal for the network in a June memo to the CNN staff, said:

“It has become such a fixture on every channel and network that its impact has become lost on the audience… It certainly will need tweaks, so we are open to feedback, but this is a great starting point to try to make ‘Breaking News’ mean something BIG is happening. We are truth-tellers, focused on informing, not alarming our viewers. You’ve already seen far less of the ‘Breaking News’ banner across our programming. The tenor of our voice holistically has to reflect that.”

And that process has gradually happened, with certain CNN personalities known for being far left losing their jobs or being shuffled around to move the network toward being something approaching a news network once again.

For example, Licht’s CNN recently gave Brian Stelter and his “Reliable Sources” program the pink slip, getting rid of one of the more opinionated and unwatched members of the CNN talking head team.

And now Licht’s strategy has come to Don Lemon, who, though not fired, was moved from his prime time slot to being a co-anchor on a morning show. Reporting on that, the Daily Wire said:

“The eight-year run of ‘Don Lemon Tonight’ will end as new president Chris Licht continues to follow through on his pledge to tone down the network’s far-Left slant. Lemon’s new gig will be co-hosting the revamped morning show with Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins.”

“There is no stronger combination of talent than Don, Poppy and Kaitlan to deliver on our promise of a game-changing morning news program,” Licht revealed in a statement.

Lemon, for his part, tried to insist that he had not been fired during a recent, on-air discussion of his move to the morning show. Speaking on that, he said:

I was presented with an opportunity that I just can’t pass up, at this network, and we have a new boss who is a morning show [expert]. And he wants a morning show that will kick off the editorial direction of the network, every single day, and I am honored that he asked me to do it.

“For all those who are out there saying, ‘Oh, he moved me and without my —,’ he asked me and I said yes. I could have said no. This is my show, I have a contract for this show,  I decided I would take him up on that and take this journey with him. This is not someone moving me.

“I was not demoted. None of that. This is an opportunity. This is a promotion. This is an opportunity for me to create something around me and I get to work with two great ladies [Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins] who you know.

However, while Lemon insists it wasn’t a demotion, many others think otherwise. For example, a longtime network morning show producer told Fox News:

This is an extremely embarrassing demotion for Don Lemon, and likely a prelude to his termination. When this new morning show launches and flounders in the ratings, which it will, he’ll be the first to go. CNN had tried for years to fix its morning programming and Don Lemon is not the answer.

Similarly, Outkick founder Clay Travis sarcastically said:

Don Lemon was demoted out of his primetime television show and he now is going to be on an early morning show. So, Don Lemon is going to move from a primetime CNN program that no one watched to an early-morning CNN program that no one will watch. Congratulations to him on the massive, massive, massive promotion.”
