James Madison on the Real Power of Government

The Quote by James Madison on the Real Power of Government:

“Wherever the real power in a Government lies, there is the danger of oppression. In our Governments, the real power lies in the majority of the Community, and the invasion of private rights is chiefly to be apprehended, not from the acts of Government contrary to the sense of its constituents, but from acts in which the Government is the mere instrument of the major number of the constituents.”  -James Madison on the Real Power of Government

My Take:

James Madison, like George Washington, was an political genius. Similarly to how George Washington understood why studying politics is important, Madison understood where power comes from. As this quote by James Madison on the real power of government shows, real power lies in the majority. The majority can determine what happens.

That fact is why we need to be ever vigilant about what the majority is pushing for. Things like “free medicare”, gun control, restrictions on free speech to protect people from hearing “hate speech”, and socialism are all efforts from the majority to become tyrannical. We need to make sure that doesn’t take root.

James Madison was worried about our privacy rights being lost. As the PATRIOT Act after 9/11 showed, that was a very prudent fear to have. We lost our rights because of the fear of the majority. That has to be reversed for liberty to prevail. If we don’t start fighting back against gun control, then soon everything will be lost. That can’t be allowed to happen.
