The History of the United States during the Administrations of Thomas Jefferson

Introduction

The History of the United States During the Administrations of Thomas Jefferson is an excellent book for all those interested in early American politics, Thomas Jefferson, or general American and 18th Century world history. I always strive to find great reading material about important subjects, and this definitely fits those criteria.  It covers most everything from Jefferson’s presidency.

Great historical events such as the purchase of Louisiana, the building of an American Navy, and the wars against the Tripoli pirates are all recorded in detail. Additionally, important political and economic decisions made by early American political leaders, especially Jefferson’s advisers, are covered in depth by Henry Adams in The History of the United States During the Administrations of Thomas Jefferson.

Summary of The History of the United States During the Administrations of Thomas Jefferson

The book profiles the financial decisions made by the Jefferson Administration, how he overcame political rivals at home and abroad, how Jefferson developed his close network of allies, and how he played foreign nations off of each other in order to build a stronger American position. That skill is something that President Trump might want to learn as he battles China over trade and tariffs. Jefferson’s Administration was able to work towards free trade and made America stronger commercially despite being in a weak geopolitical position. While Trump’s tariffs might not be as bad as the media says, they are still putting America in a weaker position.

For example, it profiles how French, English, and Spanish interests were all potential threats to the United States during the time period. That threat of foreign invasion is something I had never considered about the Jeffersonian era. Adams also describes how internal political struggles between the Federalists and Democratic-Republicans created problems. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the topics described above.

Also, Adams describes the tough but important fiscal decisions made by Jefferson. For the good of America, Jefferson worked as hard as possible to keep its financial position secure. That’s certainly more than can be said for our leaders today, who spend with reckless abandon.

Adams is nothing if not detailed. Each and every page of The History of the United States During the Administrations of Thomas Jefferson is packed full of details about the Jefferson Administration, what it did, and why.

Why The History of the United States during the Administrations of Thomas Jefferson is an important book to read:

I think this book is important because of the way in which describes the struggles that early Americans faced. Unlike now, any poor decision made by Jefferson could have led to the destruction of America as an entity. The nation could have been split apart by a foreign invader, or rent in two by domestic struggles.

That is why George Washington encouraged America to avoid entangling alliances and other foreign entanglements, as I wrote about in “Avoid Foreign Entanglements.” Henry Adams does a great job of describing how Jefferson and his administration understood the importance of that advice and implemented it. While it was a political struggle to do so, it was crucial to America’s survival. So Jefferson did it. Current American citizens need to understand that struggle and why it was, and is, so important.

We are fortunate enough to live in a time of relative peace and great wealth for America. However, that could be torn asunder at any moment. This book shows why America survived its early days- the strength of its leaders.

And none of those leaders were more significant than Thomas Jefferson. As described in The Age of Federalism, Thomas Jefferson essentially won the battle over both how the Founding Fathers would be remembered and what sort of nation America would be. He battled both Adams and Washington over the size of the federal government, its relationship with the states, and many other issues and won that battle. Because of him, we largely remember the Founding Fathers as supportive of a republic of yeomen farmers and small government.

That was not really the case; that is what Jefferson and Madison believed. Hamilton and Washington wanted the nation to industrialize and become a much more modernized nation than the republic of small farms that Jefferson wanted.

But Jefferson won, as you can read about in The History of the United States During the Administrations of Thomas Jefferson. He overcame the sentiment of the federalists and turned America into a republic of farmers with a small federal government. That lasted through his administration, through the administrations of Madison, and through the administrations of Monroe. Jefferson was successful at not only enacting his views, but at
