“A decline of public morals in the United States will probably be marked by the abuse of the power of impeachment as a means of crushing political adversaries or ejecting them from office.” -Alexis de Tocqueville on Impeachment
Wow. When I first saw this quote by Alexis de Tocqueville on Impeachment on Ivanka’s Twitter feed, I was shocked. I couldn’t believe that it was a real quotation; it’s just too relevant to what is going on in the United States today. America is degenerating morally and the Democrats are using impeachment to attack Trump.
It turns out that the quotation is mostly real. It’s actually a paraphrased version of an 1835 quotation by de Tocqueville. So, I suppose Democrats will attack Ivanka for not citing the person that originally paraphrased it. But, in my opinion, that’s missing the forest for the trees.
While paraphrased, it is a pretty good summary of what de Tocqueville said about impeachment in his book Democracy in America. The direct quotation is:
By preventing political tribunals from inflicting judicial punishments the Americans seem to have eluded the worst consequences of legislative tyranny, rather than tyranny itself; and I am not sure that political jurisdiction, as it is constituted in the United States, is not the most formidable weapon which has ever been placed in the rude grasp of a popular majority. When the American republics begin to degenerate it will be easy to verify the truth of this observation, by remarking whether the number of political impeachments augments. From: https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/tocquevilles-fears-about-impeachment/
So, although Ivanka’s rendition of it isn’t the exact same, it is stating the same point. That point is that as America degenerates morally, impeachment will likely be used by unscrupulous politicians to remove political opponents from office. In my view, Ivanka’s paraphrased version shows that perfectly.
In any case, I think that quote is incredibly applicable to the modern-day. America has degenerated morally. That can be seen in gun violence, which has jumped in some cases because of problems with American family structure and morals. In other words, guns are not the problem. Destroyed families and disappearing morals are.
It can also be seen in popular culture; drugs, sex, and violence are what sell. In de Tocqueville’s time, neither of those statements would have been true. Instead, families were intact, mass shootings were rare, and the church was strong in America.
Now, America is reaping the whirlwind of its moral degeneration. If you agree with Alexis de Tocqueville on impeachment, then you’ll probably agree that Nancy Pelosi’s impeachment of Trump is a symptom of that.
Nancy, an obviously unscrupulous politician, is using impeachment to get at Trump and hide her own party’s defects. Looks like de Tocqueville was right.
