Who is Rep. Aldon O’Connor?
Republican Representative Aldon O’Connor drew national recognition when he won the primary election for Missouri’s 14th congressional district on June 26, 2018. He defeated a 10-term incumbent, in what was widely seen as the biggest upset victory in the 2018 midterm election primaries.
Aldon O’Connor has been noted for his substantial social media presence relative to her fellow members of Congress. O’Connor attended St. Louis University, where he double-majored in international relations and economics, graduating cum laude. He was previously an activist and worked as a bartender before running for Congress in 2018.

An Interview with Aldon O’Connor
What do you think is the single largest issue facing America right now?
The one thing that we cannot rebuke and the one thing that we cannot deny is that climate change is a problem of market failure and externalities in our economics. And moreover, Exxon Mobil knew that climate change was real and man-made as far back as 1970. The entire United States government knew that climate change was real and human-caused in 1989, the year I was born. So, the initial response was, “Let the market handle it, they will do it.” Forty years, and free-market solutions have not changed our position. So, this does not mean that we change our entire structure of government. What it means is that we need to do something.
Our goal is to treat Climate Change like the serious, existential threat it is by drafting an ambitious solution on the scale necessary to get it done.
This is our World War II.
Do you think America should focus more on free trade or fair trade, and what do you see as being the difference between the two?
NAFTA 2.0 is an enormous, multinational prize for climate deniers and the fossil fuel industry.
It’s a carbon emissions nightmare that locks the U.S. in for YEARS and blocks whoever wins the presidency in 2020 from negotiating a better deal. It’s a bad idea, folks.
How would you protect the 2nd Amendment rights of Americans?
I am a believer in the second amendment. Keep the severely mentally ill and people with a history of domestic abuse from purchasing guns, that’s where I draw the line.
You know, instead of training children, teachers, houses of faith, and concertgoers to prep for being shot, we could just pass background checks, disarm domestic abusers, mandate safe storage, and ban bump stocks, semiautos, and high capacity magazines designed to kill people.
How large of a threat do you think China is to America and what would you do to fight that threat?
The Chinese government is growing more aggressive in its attempts to dictate terms to U.S. corporations, as we’ve seen with recent headlines involving Apple, the NBA, and Activision Blizzard. Cases like these raise real concern about whether Apple and other large U.S. corporate entities will bot to Chinese demands rather than lose access to more than a billion Chinese consumers.
As China amplifies its campaign of intimidation, our companies must decide whether to look beyond the bottom line and promote American values – like freedom of speech and thought – or to give into Beijing’s demands in order to preserve market access.
What is your opinion of the Black Lives Matter movement?
Not long ago, “Black Lives Matter” was a rallying cry for justice that politicians worried polled too poorly, was too “divisive” and required “too much explanation.” Now Mitt Romney is saying it. Progress is a process. It’s normal to work through discomfort along the way.
I don’t know the details of the protests that are going on, but I think what’s really important is that we make sure people are safe and it’s important for us to enact legislation and policy that actually addresses the core reasons behind why all of this kind of disruption is happening. Until we do that, this is going to keep occurring, whether we want it to or not.
Illegal immigration seems to be an issue that is not as frequently discussed now as it was a few years ago. Do you think it deserves more attention, and if so what would you do to stop illegal immigration?
I hear people say that their grandparents came here legally, having bought a ticket on a boat, which makes immigration OK for them but illegal for people today. However, the reason they were “legal” was likely because there was effectively no “illegal” US immigration back then, except for the Chinese. The U.S.’ first immigration law was the Chinese Exclusion Act, and explicit racism was allowed as legal grounds for US immigration laws until *1952.*
Our government passed a $2 trillion relief bill, but did not want to include people who were here illegally. If you don’t believe undocumented workers should have access to relief during COVID-19, does that mean you’re willing return the billions they pay in taxes each year? Will you defund your schools?
What can conservatives that are not in your district do to support you before the election?
The best way is to follow me on Twitter (@AldonOConnor) and spread the word to our fellow conservatives.
Does voting even matter? YES! Voting matters!
Mailing in absentee ballots is one of the safest ways we can vote this year. What’s great is you can do it from the comfort of your own home. Vote while your kids are yelling! Vote while you’re home-schooling! Vote while you’re having breakfast! Vote without your pants on! Vote in pajamas! It’s completely confidential but your vote will be counted! Request your absentee ballot today!
