The 1776 Commission: A New and Much-Needed Initiative from President Trump

The Quote by President Trump on the 1776 Commission:

“Our mission is to defend the legacy of America’s founding, the virtue of America’s heroes, and the nobility of the American character. We must clear away the twisted web of lies in our schools and out classrooms, and teach our children the magnificent truth about our country. We want our sons and daughters to know that they are the citizens of the most exceptional nation in the history of the world.” -Donald Trump on the 1776 Commission

Why America Needs Patriotic Education Standards

This past week, President Trump announced the creation of the 1776 Commission. Made up of a board of experts in American history, it will work to counter the lies and horrific, anti-American nature of the leftist-run 1619 Project.

Unlike that project, which is intended to destroy America by eroding our faith in our history, institutions, and founders, the 1776 Commission will teach American schoolchildren the truth, which is that our Founding Fathers were some of the greatest men to have ever lived and that what they accomplished was monumental.

Here are the details that have come out so far, mainly from Trump’s speech on the commission and its goals:

“I will soon sign an executive order establishing a national commission to promote patriotic education. It will be called the ‘1776 Commission’,” Trump said in 17-minute speech at the National Archives marking the anniversary of the Constitution’s signing.

The commission “will encourage our educators to teach your children about the miracle of American history and make plans to honor the 250th anniversary of our founding” in 2026

Because it is so new, details are scarce. There’s not much out there about the 1776 Commission other than that it is meant to help teach Americans the truth about the miracle that is America and why our history is worth honoring.

And that is much needed. As said in the National Review,

America’s proud history is worth defending, and it is worth defending through government and politics. There are fair arguments about how best to go about that task consistently with a duly conservative skepticism about the proper powers of federal and local government, but conservatives should not shy away from conserving the core of our national history, ideals, and culture — a goal that not so long ago was neither partisan nor ideological.

So yes, there is a reason that conservatives should support the 1776 Commission. It is not the first step towards fascism, as some leftists have said (as if they do not already call anything they disagree with “fascist”). Instead, it is a project that will fight back against the lies the left is spreading about our Founders and American history and help them see the truth. As that truth is what will create an “informed citizenry” that is able to properly vote on America’s future because of its understanding of and appreciation for the past, this new commission is something that every conservative should embrace and promote.

Many of the current attacks on American history that we are seeing are because of the historical illiteracy of many young Americans. They do not know the truth, so when bad actors on the left spread lies about the Founders, those young and ignorant leftists are willing to listen and then react. The tearing down of statues and vandalism of “racist” monuments is a testament to that. Perhaps, as the 1776 Commission gains steam, that process will start to break down and young Americans will no longer believe the lies of the left.

Additionally, for conservatism to be popular, the citizenry must be informed, which Ronald Reagan noted in his quote on that subject:

An informed patriotism is what we want. And are we doing a good enough job teaching our children what America is and what she represents in the long history of the world? . . . We’ve got to do a better job of getting across that America is freedom — freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of enterprise. And freedom is special and rare. It’s fragile. . . . Let’s start with some basics: more attention to American history and a greater emphasis on civic ritual.

“But wait,” you might think, “that quote has little to nothing to do with conservatism.” And on the face of things, you’d be right. It’s about America’s founding ideals and values, not conservatism.

However, the thing is, conservatism will only exist as a popular ideology if the people of a nation want to conserve some aspects of that nation’s culture and values. Values like freedom of speech, religion, enterprise, and others are not universal. There are cultural.

America, for a long time, had a culture that promoted those values. From our Founding documents to the points our politicians would make at speeches and rallies, those rights and values were almost universally respected. Both the right and left, although they disagreed on many subjects, used to at least agree on the fact that America’s basic values -the ones outlined by Reagan- are worth preserving.

But all of that has changed. Now, our Founding Fathers are oft-maligned as either racist slaveholders or racists that did not do enough to abolish slavery. Our Founding values are attacked because, leftists claim, they are racist since slavery existed while they were codified. And so on and so forth- America’s national character and common creed are under a sustained assault. The New York Times’s 1619 Project is the best example of that- it is meant not to show the truth about our history, but to twist it so that schoolchildren hate America.

We will not survive long as a nation if this continues. A nation needs some sense of unity if it is to remain a nation, and America’s source of unity has traditionally been its values. The values that conservatives are now fighting desperately to preserve. We have been losing for years as Democrats launch bad-faith attack after bad-faith attack on our Founders and the values they established as the root of the American experiment.

But, with the 1776 Commission, that might finally change. Teachers, instead of filling children’s heads with leftist lies, will instead be forced to teach them the truth about the glory of the Founding Fathers and the American Revolution. The New York Times will no longer enjoy its monopoly on education about the American Revolution and early American history- its 1619 project will be exposed as a web of lies, frauds, and misleading “facts.” And Americans will suddenly start to see the glory that is their nation because of the 1776 Commission.

We are not a racist country. We are a nation that has done many good things for the world, as Dinesh D’Souza wrote about in America: Imagine a World Without Her. That is the truth, not whatever Nicole Hannah Jones is saying. Hopefully, the 1776 Commission will show why America is the greatest nation on Earth and why naysayers like Ms. Jones are horribly and obviously wrong.

Finally, in my own contribution to the 1776 Commission, I’d like to recommend a few books about the American Revolution so that you can see just how wonderful both it and the Founding Fathers were. You should read, as quickly as you are able, The Age of Federalism, Washington’s Crossing, To Begin the World Anew, His Excellency: George Washington, Founding Brothers, and The Coming of the Revolution. They will teach you the truth about American history and show you why the leftists are lying.

Thank goodness Trump created the 1776 Commission. America needs it. We need to have a patriotic education, not the anti-American education we currently have.
